Each of the 20 hour Short Language Awareness Courses focuses on a different area of language. They are designed for experienced and novice English teachers, who want to be more up-to- date in their teaching and expand their understanding of these areas from a communicative perspective. Each course is completely free-standing and no previous courses are required. There is the option of taking the 6 coures as a way of gaining access to the JointCERT in place of the Introductory Modules.

Course Description
|
Exploring Phonology (20 hours)
|
This course aims to make the area of pronunciation more accessible to teachers. It looks at pronunciation from all levels (intonation, connected speech and the sound system). It is designed to give a clear overview of English pronunciation, show why it is so important speaking and listening skills, and show how it can be explored in the classroom.

Exploring Vocabulary (20 hours)
|
This course aims to give participants an overview of vocabulary from a contemporary perspective. It explores the role of vocabulary in language teaching; concepts such as collocation and vocabulary in context, and looks at how this information can be put into effect to make for better vocabulary and language learning.

Exploring Grammar (20 hours)
|
This course aims to enable participants to gain a better understanding of English grammar from a communicative perspective and to be able to teach it more effectively. Various areas of English grammar are explored and some grammar myths are dispelled.

Exploring Reading (20 hours)
|
The aim of the course is to equip teachers with a broader range of options for the development of effective reading in their students. The course explores the notions of purpose, conventions of text type, reading micro-skills and strategies. The course is focused on how these notions can improve the teaching, learning and assessment of reading.

Exploring Writing (20 hours)
|
This course aims to raise awareness of the nature of writing as communication through notions such as: purpose, role-relationship, and shared knowledge, layout, text structure, as well as grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation. The course looks at how these notions all play an important role in effective writing. The course also look at different approaches to teaching and assessing writing in the classroom.

Exploring Oral Skills (20 hours)
|
This course focuses on the skills of speaking and listening. The aim of the course is to raise awareness of important features of these skills, and of the nature of spoken language in general. Through a better understanding of spoken language, as well as the purpose, text type, context and strategies of speaking and listening, these skills can be developed more effectively in the classroom.

Language Awareness in ELT is designed to equip teachers with a solid baes of langauge awareness and understanding of the nature of language as communication. It consists of 3 modules of 40 hours making a total of 120 hours. The course can be taken as an alternative to the Introductory Modules and to gain access to the JointCERT. The Language Awareness in ELT course is less intensive than the Introductory Modules and does not require compulsory study outside the classroom. It also has a strong emphasis on development reading and writing skills, which are essential for studying a certificate course.
